What 80s VJs is
80s VJs is an independent online magazine about the MTV era. The domain began in 2011 as a fan home page for the five original MTV video jockeys, published around the channel's 30th anniversary. Those profiles, notes, photographs and reader memories are still here, in the archive of each section.
Since 2026 the site has covered the wider story: how music television worked and changed, the music of the decade, the studio sound behind it, and the cassettes, decks, video formats and records people still own.
How stories are made
New stories answer questions readers actually ask: what a label or switch means, how two formats differ, what an old tape or record is worth. Each piece is researched from published sources and edited by the desk. We avoid inventing prices and dates; where the market only gives a range, we say so and explain what moves it.
Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and similar free sources and carry the photographer's name and licence under the image. Archive pages keep the credits they were published with.
Independence
80s VJs is not affiliated with MTV, Paramount, SiriusXM, any record label or manufacturer, or any of the people profiled on the site. Names of shows, channels and products are used only to report on them.
