The short answer? No. Forget what you hear about Disney Black Diamond tapes hitting for four figures; on eBay, opened copies of these titles routinely sell for $5 to $25.

But a few VHS tapes are genuinely worth something, and it's not the opened titles from '90s movie premieres. The real money is in the small number of sealed or rare titles that can pull big numbers in the right condition.

Common VHS releases typically sell for $1–$10

Most of your box's contents are only going to move for a few dollars each, if that. Common released VHS tapes are super common, and they'll just bog down your eBay list and delay a serious quest to unload sealed rarities that could sell. Consumers aren't clamoring for tapes that replay familiar movie scenes.

Rare horror films, Disney Black Diamond editions, and sealed tapes can sell for $50–$500 or more

Most of the VHS tapes that actually see buyer interest are the ones in perfect condition and still in their original factory packaging, particularly if they're a sought-after title. As Kiplinger points out, select sealed VHS tapes from 1977 to 1990 are the ones that pull the most interest.

It's a narrow slice of your box, and that's why a casual search often gives the wrong impression. But opened copies of these "Black Diamond editions" sell for an average of $15.

Sealed, graded, and scarce VHS titles can bring in thousands of dollars

Plenty of big scores claim the same status as the Disney Black Diamond, and the fact is that most of those have been opened at one point.

How to check sold listings on eBay

If a tape of yours might qualify, the best way is to hunt for sold listings on eBay rather than just relying on what's advertised. Some VHS tapes hit absurd asking prices that no one pays, so always use the "Sold Listings" filter to get a sense of what buyers actually pay.

Step one is to accept most of your VHS tapes are worth little or nothing. Only tapes that you've never opened, and one-of-a-kind titles can sell for hundreds or thousands. Always use eBay's sold listings filter to understand comparable prices, and ignore the ridiculous asking prices mums or headline-chasers often attach to VHS tapes.
